Through the Loop

As well as revisiting the bouncing balls we had made in class, I also wanted to try animating a ball jumping through a loop. Trying to make the Ball a bit more animated and have some sense of character.

I tried keeping mind anticipation having the ball jump forwards then backwards like it was trying to gain the energy to make the jump then having some celebratory  jumps after achieving it.

I think it was successful fr what I was trying to achieve and I enjoyed the process of doing it.

I tried to add in some textures to my objects using the Arnold Material Library, and also following this tutorial which really helped explain how to apply it. Although I still did find the process to be slightly temperamental.

Angler Fish

Thinking back to the Fish world that I was worked on and the angler fish character that we had, I wanted to attempt a low poly model of one. It actually turned out a lot better than I thought it would, i like the simplistic style of low poly models and it makes you rethink the characteristics that are important and inform the model.

Colour Studies

Colour week was a really hectic week, and I don’t feel I produced enough work to grasp the purpose of it so I did these quick enough colour studies.

I used the site which helps you create your own colour palette. I tried using some non-earthy colours to try and set the Balancing world apart from our world. This isn’t exactly a colour script but an exploration of possible colour schemes.colour-studies-recovered

This study is going back towards the thumbnails I had originally done. Again with the Smalls I wanted it to have very light warm colours, I branched more off the 5 colours so I could get a better range of green hues.I still need to work on getting refined details in but I think  this is a good representation of how the Smalls live.

Colour Research

These are some artists I looked at, I like the colours and how they’ve blended colours to create atmosphere and the rock formations.

Simple but informs the viewer of the environment.

Working on Tonal week

When I working on the Tonal week I had only really bean to move on to producing digital pieces , and I knew I was pretty rusty with digital work and I wanted to work on my textures and creating more atmospheric environments.

I still wanted to try and stick with a simplified tonal palette and I found this tutorial by Tyler Gody showing how I can use tones to shape up a painting.

I then applied this to this first painting, I learned a lot from doing this and I like the result, my composition needs to be a bit clearer but I like the smokey atmosphere I got out of here.backgroundbaw2I then refined the same process, changing it up so this one has a darker setting than above, not as smokey so I feel it has a better definitionbaw2undergrounfrock-creature

Here I started to mess about with different textured brushes getting in some more details.baw2bg3

Mushroom World Animatic

This is our teams finished animatic.

We used sounds from though we couldn’t get some of the sounds for the creatures talking so Bradley and me used my phone to record ourselves and used that instead.

We edited it together using photoshop, which I’ve never done before but we figured it out pretty easy to work with and we just need to work on the timing. I liked how it turned out, the timing works well for comedic effect and you can follow the story well. There are points where I believe we could of used some more frames to give it more flow.

Linearts for animatic

I worked on going over the backgrounds making the linearts, it was difficult doing the control panel in the tower, it had a lot of elements to it and I had to also try and get the perspective right as the panel curves. I googled some control panels just to get ideas for what sort of buttons and stuff to use.

Bradley drew the moving parts for the animatic and Nuala worked on doing some amazing colouring. Unfortunately we were running out of time to get the animatic finished, so instead of doing it fully in colour we changed it to only doing tonal.

To get the animatic finished I helped out by doing the tonal for the above backgrounds and drawing some other mushroom creatures that we were going to use.

I do wish we had enough time to do it fully in colour, but I think that the tonal worked really well and since our animatic focuses more on a story and it’s characters having the less colour means that it’s easier to focus on them rather than the world around it.

I drew out a clearer story board but there’s still some changes that we want to make to it, but we have it all down so we can start working on the backgrounds we’ll need.

As a team we worked on these backgrounds, we drew them out on paper then Bradley put them into Photoshop files at the right aspect ratio, so we now all have copies we can work on.

Story boarding Ideas

Started out working on some quick ideas of what could happen in our animatic, trying to think of some ideas for why the tower would fall over.

Here I have one mushroom man chopping down mushroom trees and then accidentally cutting off the leg to a mushroom tower.20161124_220700

This was just a quick other idea of a mushroom man messing around with the little light spores in the world and getting chased off.

I then went back to the idea of using the magic mushrooms, where the driver of our mushroom tower takes a snake from his friend without realising they’re magic, so once he starts tripping the mushroom tower goes out of control and stumbles over.

I showed this one to my teammates and they liked it, so I think it’s going to be the basis of our story, we still need to work out a more definite version of it.
